Unleashing Imagination: My Journey of Sculpting with a Fresh Creative Process

I have realized that my previous process of making sculptures solely from found objects was slow and unorganized. Found objects still forms the back bone of my work, which majorly defines the form of the sculpture but I have started incorporating other sculpting materials like clay & wires, making it more durable and faster to develop. In order to streamline my artistic practice, I have adopted a more structured approach that involves several stages: idea generation, sketching, planning, experimentation, and construction.

To generate ideas, I have been studying the works of renowned sculptors like Henry Moore, Alberto Giacometti, Alexander Calder, Michelangelo, and others for inspiration. I have been particularly fascinated by how human figures can express emotions through their posture and relationships with other human figures. This interest is evident in my recent work, where I have been using tyre tubes cut into strips to clad over the armature to create sculptures of human figure.

The flexibility of the tyre tubes is something that I really appreciate in my sculptures. The pliable nature of the material allows me to manipulate it and create different forms and shapes, which adds a sense of fluidity and dynamism to my sculptures. The way the tyre tubes wrap around the armature and bring the overall form together is something that I find visually appealing and intriguing.

With inspiration and material in mind, I move on to the sketching stage. I put my ideas on paper, experimenting with different compositions, poses, and proportions. Sketching allows me to visualize and refine my ideas before moving on to the next stage.

After sketching, I start planning the execution of my sculpture. I consider the materials I will need, the size and scale of the sculpture, and the overall design. I create a detailed plan, outlining each step of the process. This helps me stay organized and focused throughout the project.

I have been experimenting with different ways of arranging and layering the strips of tyre tubes to create visually engaging surfaces that enhance the overall expression of emotion in my sculptures. The texture and pattern of the tyre tubes add an interesting visual element to my work, creating a unique rhythm and dynamic quality to the sculptures. Moreover, the use of tyre tubes in my sculptures aligns with my interest in sustainability and repurposing materials. It challenges traditional notions of materials used in sculpture and adds an element of surprise and unexpectedness to my work.

Finally, once I have refined my design and experimented with different techniques, I move on to the construction phase. I gather my materials, create an armature as the framework for my sculpture, and start adding layers and details.

My new process, which involves idea generation, sketching, planning, experimentation, and construction, has helped me in being more efficient and faster in the development of my sculptures. It has allowed me to bring structure to my artistic practice, while also enabling me to explore new possibilities in expressing emotions through the human figure. I am excited to continue experimenting with tyre tubes and other unconventional materials in my sculptures, and to further explore the expressive potential of human figures in my art.
